Turner Classic Tuesday — September 29 – October 05, 2015

Each Tuesday Hunter highlights the best classic films airing in the coming week on TCM.

This week’s lineup features an American James Bond, a sequel to 2001, and one of only three starring roles for the iconically laconic James Dean.

THIS WEEK’S PICKS

<strong>Thursday, October 1</strong>
Rumor has it Cary Grant was up for the role of James Bond in Dr. No, but the 59 year old actor had zero desire to be in a franchise. So he made Charade instead, a film that is somewhat of a spoof of the spy genre, while still being a fast-paced thriller at the same time. This film also stars Audrey Hepburn, who was 25 years Grant’s junior. Fearing he’d look foolish chasing after a much younger woman, Grant insisted he be the pursued, not the pursuer.
<strong>Saturday, October 3</strong>
If you’d think the very idea of a sequel to 2001: A Space Odyssey is an apostasy, unfortunately Arthur C. Clarke wrote another book, thus Hollywood made another movie. Starring Roy Scheider and John Lithgow, it goes without saying that 2010 is inferior to its predecessor. Still, if morbid curiosity gets the better of you, go for it.
<strong>Monday, October 5</strong>
Despite only starring in three films, James Dean remains etched in our shared cinematic memories as one of the most iconic film stars ever. I think he’s a tad overrated as an actor (compare him to Montgomery Clift as far as lanky Method actors go), but you can’t argue with that kinda’ charisma. Directed by Elia Kazan, and based on a book by John Steinbeck, East Of Eden finds Dean methodically brooding as only James Dean could.

SUPER SPECIAL BONUS CONENT – James Dean and Ronald Reagan square off in a 1954 scene from the TV show General Electric Theater.
