Turner Classic Tuesday — May 27- June 01, 2015

Each Tuesday Hunter highlights the best classic films airing in the coming week on TCM.

The week after Memorial Day features football and cowboys, Dutch and the Duke, and Spencer Tracy delivering social sermons and Judo justice. God Bless America!

THIS WEEK’S PICKS

<strong>Wednesday, May 27</strong>
Pat O’Brien stars as the eponymous Knut Rockne, All American in this sparkling profile of the famed Notre Dame coach. This biopic is most famous for a mere 15 minutes spent onscreen by indie darling Ronald Reagan. Whatever happened to that guy? Anyway, watch this for the Gipper.
<strong>Saturday, May 30</strong>
Saturday the spotlight shines on Spencer Tracy, one of the most spectacular screen actors ever. First, Tracy stars as a Veteran who is one-armed, Judo-trained, and fightin’ for what’s right in Bad Day At Black Rock. This movie also features Robert Ryan and Lee Marvin, and was directed by John Sturges. In other words, it’s probably too cool for you to handle. Later that night Tracy stars in famed German filmmaker Fritz Lang’s Fury. I’ve never seen this, but it’s about a guy who escapes a lynch mob and returns for revenge. Sold!
<strong>Sunday, May 31</strong>
The Duke plays a crusty curmudgeon who leads a bunch of kids on a cattle drive in The Cowboys. This is post True Grit-John Wayne (i.e. it’s not that good), but it is worthwhile for one milestone movie moment. I won’t tell you what it is. Best you experience the heartbreak for yourself. Also, screw you Bruce Dern!
