Three showed up for Five Came Back – the new Netflix documentary about John Ford, Frank Capra, John Huston, George Stevens, and William Wyler’s service in World War II. Is this epic, three-part documentary among the few and the proud? Or is it ultimately unworthy of the famous and heroic filmmakers? *PLUS* The Dudes discuss the Star Wars: The Last Jedi trailer, Chris picks a bitter breakfast stout brewed for the chosen few, and Jake gives a week 7 FML recap and tries out his best Dan Carlin impersonation (spoiler – it’s terrible)! Forward march!

WEEK 06 BOX OFFICE BREAKDOWN

Week 06 was the week of the Man Movie. The knock down drag out fight of the week was going to be between Logan and Kong: Skull Island. Would the aging super hero in the (now) aging super hero film show its value at $57 dollars, or would the big ol’ monkey climb the tower to get that $2 million Best Performer bonus?

I, and many others in our league, banked on the big bad ape, but in the end the Wolverine had what may be his last stand in the Perfect Cineplex. 334 cineplexes were smart enough to stack 6 screens of the old man, and pair it with the young woman in the jumpsuit, and the little baby in the business suit. Powered by the $12 million in bonuses, plus the $5 million PC bonus, this cineplex would net you about $74 million.

Scorsese have been?). PLUS – Terrible impressions of Frank Costello, Bill The Butcher, and Tommy DeVito!

WEEK 05 BOX OFFICE BREAKDOWN

You would think that, with me being in Los Angeles, somehow just being so close to the epicenter of the movie world would give me some special insight into the Perfect Cineplex, and I would steal away a victory with a can’t miss lineup. But no, instead I found myself driving around Los Angeles, looking for parking, and trying to set a lineup at 9 AM! How do people out there have brains working that early every morning? It’s insanity.

That’s not the only thing insane that happened this week. Niki Caro’s The Zookeeper’s Wife managed to sneakily collect $3.3 million in box office on only 541 screens, letting it coast in easily as this week’s BP bonus winner. It’s my personal opinion that this film’s heavy advertising before all the Oscar films helped out with building buzz, because its 60% fresh Rotten Tomatoes rating certainly wasn’t putting butts in the seats.

This week’s new animated film The Boss Baby did a very respectable $50.2 million this week. This makes a lot of sense when you think how long we have been without a new animated feature. The last was The Lego Batman Movie, which I think targets a different demographic than this cutesy family film. The last two slots are the “man movies” of the week, with Kong: Skull Island and Logan rounding out the perfect cineplex.

WEEK 04 BOX OFFICE BREAKDOWN

While most of us thought we’d be saying “Go go Power Rangers!” come Monday, instead we found ourselves barely speaking to people around us in the style of this week’s BP bonus winner Logan. It’s looking like this A+ super-anti-hero flick has long adamantium legs. Bringing in $109.9K/bux, the man with the sideburns finished just a slice above Power Rangers and Kong: Skull Island in a heated BP race.

When one picture runs away with the $2 million bonus unexpectedly, you end up with a 6x stack like you see here. Add in that high-value Power Rangers anchor up top plus one screen of the surprisingly long-lived The Shack and you’ve got yourself one of the 39 Perfect Cineplexes awarded this week.

On the other hand, if you played Wilson, you probably didn’t do as well. When a movie costing only 75% of your film’s cost beats you outright, you know you’re having a bad week. But maybe that fits the character. Did ANYBODY actually see this one? Please comment and tell me about it, because I’m genuinely interested.

WEEK 03 BOX OFFICE BREAKDOWN

Week 03 went about as poorly for me as it did for every movie not named Beauty and the Beast. This film came out swinging and posted the 6th biggest domestic release of all time, going past $150 million. Despite mediocre rotten tomatoes reviews, look for this one to hold on for a while, especially with an 86% audience score. Even yours truly will be spending $20 to see this picture this weekend, so I’ll report back when it takes BP again next week.

Beauty and the Beast did so well that it’s 3 day splits took up 3 of the top 4 $/bux value this week, with #3 going to The Belko Experiment. It couldn’t beat out Saturday or Sunday of Beauty, but it did post a very respectable $125.4K/bux. This one has even worse RT scores, with both reviews and audience score coming in below 50%. This isn’t promising for the film, but it’s priced at a value this week, so it’s something to play around with.

Logan popped his claws for the first time this FML season, earning a spot in the PC with over $17 million at the box office. I still recommend you see this film, but I think the fanboys have all gone, and won’t be going back for round two. If you have seen it, read the much different Old Man Logan comic. It’s got all the road film goodness, with a dash of Unforgiven thrown in for good measure.

Wait, Jacob’s never seen Apocalypse Now?! The horror… the horror…

Chris helps Jacob wade deep into the heart of this his cinematic sins to pay penance with a War Crimes review of Francis Ford Coppola’s seminal masterpiece from 1979. But does Apocalypse Now still carry the weight of a 300 pound Brando, or should it be terminated with extreme prejudice?

PLUS! Chris surrenders his stout streak to pair a brighter beer with Coppola’s classic, Jake discloses the details of last week’s Fantasy Movie League dossier, and Chris attempts his best impersonation of Werner Herzog… twice!

WEEK 02 BOX OFFICE BREAKDOWN

Remember how I said I needed a dartboard to make my Week 02 picks? Apparently I need a better way to make my picks. Only 23 players had their dartboards calibrated correctly enough to land on the perfect cineplex. Let’s break down my misconceptions.

First, Kong: Skull Island wasn’t the mini-flip I projected. Instead, it put up a mighty $61 million at the box office, way more than Logan‘s $38 million. I even said that I thought the latter would beat Kong head to head. So by no means was this my most accurate week.

I called The Lego Batman Movie having a good week since it’s the only children’s movie in town. That remains true this week… to an extent. With the arrival of a certain woman-loves-bull-monster movie, we may see Lego  lose some ground to the Disney film, as long as the gay Le Fou controversy doesn’t keep some families from catching Batman and the Toy Wonder in theaters.

Finally, I thought La La Land would finally find its day in the sun with a BP bonus… but it loses yet again to the resilient Hidden Figures. This movie has incredible legs, so either audiences love the story, or they love looking at Janelle Monae, and honestly it could be both. I know locally that LSU is doing a Hidden Figures night, and I’m guessing that they’re not the only ones. This one may even find it’s 4th Best Performer bonus in Week 03.
