Turner Classic Tuesday — December 29, 2015 – January 4, 2016

Each Tuesday Hunter highlights the best classic films airing in the coming week on TCM.

Happy New Year! We’ve got a few solid choices to close out the calendar, plus a super strange remake to kick off 2016!

THIS WEEK’S PICKS

Tuesday, December 29
It’s a great day for Ray Harryhausen fans, with a choice selection of his finest flicks. However given I’m duty-bound to choose just one, I gotta’ go with The 7th Voyage of Sinbad. The reasons are many, but most of all because it features a battle to the death between a dragon and a cyclops!
Thursday, December 31
I love The Thin Man. The book by Dashiell Hammett is a gritty, gumshoe, potboiler, but thankfully the filmmakers realized the true appeal of the story was the witty banter between leads William Powell and Myrna Loy. In a nutshell, this is an urbane screwball comedy about a brilliant detective, his rich heiress wife, and their adventures solving murders while getting increasingly intoxicated.
Friday, January 1
So The Outrage is an early 1960s remake of Akira Kurosawa’s masterpiece Rashomon, starring Paul Newman as a Mexican. About what you’d expect, which is to say it’s simultaneously a mediocre movie, yet essential viewing.
