Each week Jacob recaps the weekend box office and the winners and losers in the Midnight Warrior Fantasy Movie League.
WEEK 10 BOX OFFICE BREAKDOWN
I know we all had a big decision to make this week, and I hope when it came down to it you made the right one and overlooked the consensus pick, because at this point we all know that the one with the weird hair pulled it off. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, Trolls has managed to overtake the mammoth Dr. Strange to grab top performer and anchor the perfect cineplex for week 10.
To round out the high scoring box office we have one Hacksaw Ridge, two screens of over-performing The Accountant, and 3 Ouija: Origin of Evil. Why did it take people this long to go and see this horror flick? I had it pegged as a Halloween picture, but maybe I should have treated Boo! as the holiday film it was and left Ouija as a normal old horror film with some legs.
My suggested cineplexes were all way off, but if you follow me on twitter you would have seen some last minute panic moves after it showed that Moonlight was showing on fewer than 100 screens. Also, Thursday preview numbers made me gain confidence in those singing trolls. A new rule of thumb for me: if you make your way into McDonald’s Happy Meals, I’m going to give you a long hard look when it comes time to pick my cineplex.
In our Midnight Warrior league, your’s truly managed to pull out his first win since we announced the league in week 3. The first win was when only I was in the league for Week 1, but I don’t know what Ricky Bobby’s dad would say because I was both first and last. Film School Dropout continued her quest to be the best with a very strong second place performance. She remains at the top of our post-week 3 cineplexes with a commanding $633 million on the season.
WEEK 10 PREDICTIONS
Hasn’t this week’s election shown that there is no point in prognosticating on our uncertain future? Is that enough to let me off the hook for this week’s difficult breakdown? How did I know the answer to that would be a strong no.
First, I think Arrival is going to do gangbusters off of its 100 percent 98% fresh Tomatometer score. Let’s start with that as an anchor. From there, I think the 96% audience score on Hacksaw Ridge is going to make it the best value of the week at an underpriced $106 bux.
Where does that leave us? With $30 bux burning a hole in our pocket. There are only two reasons you should dance with the devil in the pale Moonlight: either it’s in 300 screens, or you’re Chris Galegar and you just have to spend every single dollar in your budget every single week. If neither of these is true, I’m thinking Ouija could stretch it’s legs one more time to provide a little value at $26 bux.
