Each week Jacob recaps the weekend box office and the winners and losers in the Midnight Warrior Fantasy Movie League.
I may not have won in Week 08, but with my first moderately successful article out, my Week 06 demons are behind me and it feels like ole’ Jake is back on top again! Let’s start off with a breakdown of last week.
WEEK 08 BOX OFFICE BREAKDOWN
Did you trust the mumu and go all in on Tyler Perry? As the over-performer of the season, you weren’t going to sniff the top spot without at least 3 screens of Boo! A Madea Halloween. Who would’ve seen that coming?
Well, FMLNerd called it exactly. So he saw it coming. Will Storks ever fly home and stop ruining my odds at a perfect cineplex? Or will we finally ban children from going to the theater? Look, nobody wants to hear a crying baby at their movie, and nobody wants them buying tickets to throw off our precious cineplexes.
Also, Sully managed to fly throw a crowd of Storks to gently crash land in its 4th week in the perfect cineplex. For a movie about airplanes, this one really has legs. But with a Tom Hanks / Clint Eastwood combo, it’s no wonder that the older demographic is moving slowly to get out and see this one. Good word of mouth will do that for a flick.
Congrats to Film School Dropout for inching past School of Rock to claim our top spot for the week! A bigger congrats is also in order for Film School Dropout as she passed IT’S A TRAP for current league champion! It seems like I call these Midnight Warriors out almost every week, so why are they not writing these articles? Well, I have it on good authority that School of Rock had a perfect cineplex in place before bailing on Storks to pick Deepwater Horizon. Maybe it’s just from my perch in South Louisiana, but I don’t know anybody who was excited about that movie. If you’ve seen it, please drop me a line and tell me why I shouldn’t just watch a much better oil rig movie.
WEEK 09 PREDICTIONS
America loves Tom Hanks. Movie goers love Tom Hanks. The man has had a movie in the perfect cineplex for 4 straight weeks. Well, I’m calling it: Inferno won’t live up to its projected $30 million gross. I’m going with the reviews on this one and projecting that Ouija: Origin of Evil finds its way onto the board in a big way. Look for $10 million gross on this Halloween weekend.
Put 7 screens of Ouija, then ask the board what else you should do. What does it say? B – O – O. That’s right, I’m going back to the Madea well with the rest of America, and it’s not just because I think I’ll account for $10 of the gross. I’m saying it’ll only fall off in the sub-45% range to bag a nice $16 million treat this weekend. Even with Inferno outperforming that will still give you a perfect cineplex in the $100 million range. Take that $7 you have left and buy yourself the large popcorn, because this scary cineplex might cause you to throw yours on the floor.
Did my article lead you to victory? Or did we both end up with a last place finish? Either way, let me know at @jakerg23.
