Turner Classic Tuesday — January 5-11, 2016

Each Tuesday Hunter highlights the best classic films airing in the coming week on TCM.

Did you know Andy Griffith played a villain in a 1950s satire about the dark side of populism that strangely explains the rise of someone like Donald Trump?

No? Read on!

THIS WEEK’S PICKS

Tuesday, January 5
Before he was the lovable Sheriff Andy Taylor on The Andy Griffith Show, folksy comedian Andy Griffith played Larry “Lonesome” Rhodes – a dark, manipulative drifter who becomes a corrupt media sensation in Elia Kazan’s A Face In The Crowd. If you distrust our celebrity culture as much as I do, this film is like a shot of moonshine.
Saturday, January 9
Them! tells the tale of an army of giant ants who descend on an unsuspecting populace. One of the best of the “Nuclear Monster Runs Amok!” pictures from the 1950s, for those of you who are into that sort of thing.
Sunday, January 10
Ok, ok, so Yours, Mine, And Ours is sentimental silliness about a widow with 8 kids marrying a widower with 10…but it stars Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda, so it’s worth a watch.

If you catch one of Hunter’s TCT picks share your thought with us on Twitter or Facebook!
