THE PLOT
With a suspicious femme fatale bankrolling his snooping, private eye J.J. Gittes uncovers intricate dirty dealings in the Los Angeles waterworks.
THE REASON
The season finale of True Detective coming up this Sunday, and I have a proposition for you. Forget it. Don’t give another minute of your life to that self-righteous, existential merry-go-round. I wish time really was a flat circle. Then maybe I wouldn’t care so much about all the time I’ve wasted hate-watching it. It just might be the only show that takes pleasure in making the audience as miserable as its cast.
Instead of giving away another 90-minutes of your precious, short life to the finale of a directionless show that somehow makes a story of gangsters, corrupt cops and powerful old-money Los Angeles families more agrovatingly dull than that damned depressing bar singer, why not invest that time in the great story, satisfyingly disturbing story of gangsters, corrupt cops and powerful old money Los Angeles families found in Roman Polanski’s 1974 neo-noir classic, Chinatown?
Nicholson, Dunaway and Huston are all operating at the top of their game in a film that remains as brutally unsettling today as it was 40 years ago.
