Turner Classic Tuesday — August 4-10, 2015

Each Tuesday Hunter highlights the best classic films airing in the coming week on TCM.

All of this weeks pictures are pretty great, but not, y’know, Godfather-level masterpieces or anything. So we need a new word to describe them…how about “lesser-pieces”? Yeah, that’s good. We should make that a thing – #lesserpieces!

THIS WEEK’S PICKS

We all have a creepy uncle Charlie in our lives, right? Only hopefully your creepy uncle Charlie doesn’t murder rich old heiresses. Alfred Hitchcock’s Shadow of a Doubt stars Teresa Wright as a teenage girl suspicious that her beloved uncle, played Joseph Cotten (fresh off of Citizen Kane), is the “merry widow murderer”. If that setup doesn’t make you all tingly, you sir or madam are deader than one of Uncle Charlie’s victims. It should be pretty obvious why Hitch said this was his favorite film he made…because lets face it, he was the ULTIMATE creepy uncle Charlie.

What could be manlier than spending all day watching Fred Astaire dance with Ginger Rogers? Nothing, I say, nothing! If you must choose just one, choose Top Hat. It was said Ginger Rogers could do everything Astaire did, but backwards and in heels. Whatever your opinion on the subject, we can all agree that they dance better than me.

Forewarning – we’re about to “Take A Trip Down Memory Lane with Hunter”, so now’s your chance to RUN!!!!! You still there? Anyway, I twice performed in the stage play Arsenic & Old Lace, the second time in the Cary Grant role of Mortimer Brewster. So I have a special affection for Arsenic & Old Lace. And why not? It’s a sweet story about two adorable little old women who poison innocent men and bury their bodies in the cellar. Fun Fact – Cary Grant hated his performance in this film, feeling it was too over-the-top.

If you catch one of Hunter’s TCT picks share your thought with us on Twitter or Facebook!
