THE PLOT

To make a quick buck Aaron (Brice) answers an ad to spend a day documenting the life of a charismatic stranger named Josef (Duplass) who is dying of cancer and wishes to create a video to his unborn son, a la the Michael Keaton film My Life.

THE REASON

I don’t typically go for found footage movies, but Creep hooked me from the start. The story is simple, but compelling. Mark Duplass carries the film with a performance that constantly reads like a rorschach test fluctuating between earnest and sinister. The tone of the Creep is also a little tough to nail down. Right up to the last few minutes I was unsure whether I was truly watching a comedy or a horror film. In the end I think the answer is both. I Laughed a lot, and I jumped a lot. Still, it’s well balanced, never feeling like a self-aware mocumentary. The genres are blended in a way that remains true to each. Patrick Brice has one slightly silly dramatic scene that comes off a little too “student film”, but he brings enough inventive style as writer/director to make up for it.

If you need something light, quick, disturbing, and hilarious this weekend consider spending your afternoon with the Creep.
