Turner Classic Tuesday — February 23-29, 2016

Each Tuesday Hunter highlights the best classic films airing in the coming week on TCM.

Leap Year yo, so you get an extra day of movie watching! Oh yeah, the Academy Awards are this week too – but who cares about those? #OscarsSoZzzzz

THIS WEEK’S PICKS

Wednesday, Feb. 24
Mighty Joe Young belongs to one of my favorite genres – the “Giant Gorilla Runs Amok” picture. We really don’t see enough of these, so each one should be treasured. This is a far cry from King Kong, but it does feature some superb SFX by Willis O’Brien AND Ray Harryhausen! For me that’s the equivalent of seeing your two favorite bands play together.

Quick – how many competitive Oscars did Peter O’Toole win? The answer – zero. Yep, not a won (see what I did there?) However, he did win the Lifetime Achievement Award for films like My Favorite Year, in which he was nominated for an Oscar for playing a boozy, flamboyant film star. One suspects this wasn’t much of a stretch.
Monday, Feb. 29
One of Cary Grant’s most famous movie lines (“Judy, Judy, Judy”) he never actually says in Only Angels Have Wings. So yeah, Hollywood’s always been full of it. Directed by Howard Hawks, Grant plays an ace pilot who is being pursued by both Jean Arthur and Rita Hayworth…tough gig.
