Turner Classic Tuesday — November 17-23, 2015

Each Tuesday Hunter highlights the best classic films airing in the coming week on TCM.

One pic this week was a landmark in special effects. The other two star men who were their own special effect. Check ’em all out and see which you prefer.

THIS WEEK’S PICKS

Wednesday, November 18
Co-directed by Michael Powell (who would go on to direct the film that inspired this podcast’s name), The Thief of Baghdad is a jewel from the crown of British cinema, and one of the most influential special effects films ever.
Thursday, November 19
While his name doesn’t echo through the ages quite to the same degree as Charlie Chaplin or Buster Keaton, Douglas Fairbanks is just as important, introducing the idea of the dashing male hero. The Mark of Zorro displays his remarkable acrobatic skill, as he did all of his own stunts, despite pushing 40.
Friday, November 20
Musical are the word (or is it lyric?) of the day. While Singin’ In The Rain is objectively the best of the bunch, An American in Paris is the lesser known, but likewise spellbinding, entry in the incomparable Gene Kelly’s canon.
