Turner Classic Tuesday — September 08-14, 2015

Each Tuesday Hunter highlights the best classic films airing in the coming week on TCM.

Humphrey Bogart, Gregory Peck, and Clark Gable give you a lesson in how to be a man’s man…albeit it by playing murderers, thieves, and philanderers. It’s complicated. Ah hell, you’ll never be as cool as them so just stay home, and don’t hurt yourself.

THIS WEEK’S PICKS

Monday, September 08
“Badges? We don’t need no stinkin’ badges!”The Treasure of The Sierra Madre is essential viewing for any one who calls themselves a movie buff, if for no other reason than this is the only time a director (John Huston) directed their father (Walter Huston) to an acting Oscar. As good as this movie is, one suspects the late-night conversations between Bogart and Huston while shooting back Scotch were just as entertaining.

Before Unforgiven, there was The Gunfighter – actually, about 42 years before. At the ripe old age of 34, Gregory Peck brings the awesome as an aging gunfighter trying to escape his past. Also, his ‘stache in this flick is Tom Selleck-level legit.
Sunday, September 13
Ever wonder what is would be like to have Ava Gardner and Grace Kelly pine for you? Well, Clark Gable didn’t have to…then again, you’re not Clark Gable. In Mogambo, John Ford remakes Victor Fleming’s 1932 film Red Dust, both about a really manly man in an exotic locale having to choose between two beautiful women. Fun fact – Red Dust also starred Clark Gable, only 21 years younger, though in that film he was being lusted after by Jean Harlow and Mary Astor. Damn dude, Bra-freaking-vo.
