Turner Classic Tuesday — July 21-27, 2015

Each Tuesday Hunter highlights the best classic films airing in the coming week on TCM.

What do this weeks’ selection of films have in common…uh, I’ve seen them? Yeah, really, that’s about it. But anyway, you should too!

THIS WEEK’S PICKS

Sigh, they just don’t make westerns like 3:10 To Yuma anymore. Hell, even when they remake 3:10 To Yuma they don’t make ’em like they used to anymore. Seriously, if you thought the remake deserved anything more than a shoulder shrug and a “meh”, then you owe it to yourself to see the original. Also, the theme song “3:10 To Yuma” is second only to High Noon.

I think we can all agree on one thing – movies are better with Jeff Goldblum. Thus, you’ll have to excuse the original 1958 The Fly for lacking that key element that made David Cronenberg’s remake so great. However, the original does have Vincent Price, so we’ll call it a draw.
Monday, July 27
If you somehow managed to make it through childhood without seeing a Shirley Temple movie, The Bachelor and The Bobby Soxer lets you familiarize yourself with her work without being a total creep. It’s also a pretty fun little film. Interesting tidbit – Cary Grant and Myrna Loy first starred together in 1935’s Wings In The Dark, where Myrna Loy received top-billing. By 1947 however, Cary Grant’s starpower surpassed hers, and he received top-billing in Bobby Soxer. But who was an even bigger star than both of them in 1935 – Shirley Temple. Oh, fame, you are so fickle.
