Turner Classic Tuesday — July 7-14, 2015

Each Tuesday Hunter highlights the best classic films airing in the coming week on TCM.

Reading this week’s list you’re liable to think I’ve gone soft. Don’t worry dear reader, I’ve thrown in a sci-fi flick as well.

THIS WEEK’S PICKS

Tuesday, July 07
According to IMDB there are 3 (legitimate) versions of A Star Is Born. I’ve only seen the first, so I’ll suggest that. It’s pretty schmaltzy at times, but has a surprisingly dark underbelly. As a movie fan, you should probably see at least one version, and this is the one I’d recommend. Also, thank GOD it looks like the Clint Eastwood-directed version starring Beyonce appears to be DOA.

Honestly, July 8 you should probably just plant yourself in front of the tube for a Sci-Fi smorgasboard. But if you only have time for one, see The Day The Earth Stood Still. Seriously. Even if you don’t love 1950s science fiction like I do, this is still essential viewing. You’ll also see where this line came from.
Saturday, July 11
Buried beneath my gruff, masculine exterior, I’m really a big softie. Which is why I love Ernst Lubitsch’s The Shop Around The Corner.  Margaret Sullavan (both the first Mrs. Henry Fonda, and then the first Mrs. William Wyler) and JIMMY STEWART play coworkers who can’t stand each other in person, but carry on a romantic pen-pal relationship, unbeknownst to either. Sound familiar? It was remade as You’ve Got Mail. While that 1998 film is dated, this 1940 film is timeless, punctuated with what Billy Wilder called “the Lubitsch touch”.

If you catch one of Hunter’s TCT picks share your thought with us on Twitter or Facebook!
